On February 14, when the whole world celebrates Valentine's Day, not everyone celebrates as a couple. For those who are not in a relationship, Singles Day is a special day. Although initially this day was ironic, over the years it has become an opportunity to reflect on loneliness, independence and the values that life without a significant other brings. So, what does Singles Day really mean? Is it a celebration of loneliness or a celebration of independence? When is Singles Day? Find out more in our article.
When is Singles Day?
Singles Day , also known as Single's Day, has its roots in China, where it has been celebrated since the 1990s. Initially, it was a day when young people, especially at universities, celebrated their "single" freedom, creating an alternative to Valentine's Day. It is worth adding that the date of November 11 (11.11) was not chosen by chance - the number "1" symbolizes a single person, hence this day has become a kind of manifesto for people who value single life.
Although Singles Day is not yet as widely celebrated in Poland as Valentine's Day, February 15 is gaining popularity year by year. Interestingly, for many people it is a day when they can feel proud of their independence, and not necessarily focus on loneliness.
Solitude or independence?
Many people see being single as something temporary, often burdened with negative connotations. Loneliness is still considered “something to avoid,” and being single is often seen as something worse than being in a relationship. However, in the wake of Singles Day it’s worth asking yourself: does living alone really have to mean loneliness, or is it rather a manifestation of independence and freedom?
Loneliness – not always what we fear
Loneliness is often seen as something negative – especially in today’s society, which places such a huge emphasis on relationships. Loneliness can lead to feelings of isolation and social awkwardness, especially if it comes as a result of unwanted changes, such as a breakup. However, loneliness doesn’t always have to be a bad thing. It’s a time that gives us the opportunity to stop, reflect, and get to know ourselves. It’s worth noting that not everyone who lives alone feels lonely.
Independence – the key to a happy single life
For many people, Singles Day is primarily an opportunity to appreciate their independence. Being single gives you the freedom to make decisions, you don't have to adapt your plans to the needs of another person. It is also a space to focus on your own passions, career or relationships with friends. Being single means not having the obligations that come with being in a relationship, and the ability to pursue your own dreams and goals.
Loneliness and mental health
While loneliness can be a difficult experience, that doesn’t mean every single person struggles with its negative effects. Research shows that single people can benefit from their independence, having more control over their lives and better mental health. Having space to develop personally, build passions, or pursue hobbies can all contribute to a sense of fulfillment and joy in life.
