Crochet - How to Get Started? A Beginner's Guide

Szydełkowanie - jak zacząć? Poradnik dla początkujących

Adrian Koźlik |

You woke up with a resolution: I'm starting to create today, but you don't know yet what technique to use. Maybe try crocheting ? It's not as difficult as it seems. You'll learn what tools and materials to choose for your first job, where to buy them, how much to spend on them, and how much time to devote to your new hobby. Sit comfortably on a pouf and start crocheting!

A moment of reflection

Have you excitedly bought all the themed magazines and your Pinterest board is full of photos? Think carefully about whether you have time for it. Crocheting is addictive, so make sure you have a place for yarns, threads, cords and other accessories. If you have a comfortable place on the pouffe and time, we can start!

What will be your first work?

It's important to know what you want to do first. If you're just starting out, I recommend a scarf. It's one of the easiest things to do, and even if you get discouraged, you have plenty of time to finish it before winter.

We choose the material for the work

Your first yarn

What thickness of material?

Don't choose yarns that are very thick or extremely thin. A length of around 200-300 meters per 100 grams is ideal to start with. Such yarns are easier to handle and more versatile to use, making it easier to learn and practice different techniques. They also provide a good balance between the thickness of the fiber and its length, which helps to evenly and aesthetically finish the finished pieces.

What color material?

Practice on light colors, because the eyes are easier to see. Light colors make it easier to follow movements and details, which is crucial for focusing on small details. Additionally, contrasting colors can help you react faster to changes in the environment, which is especially important during fast and precise tasks. With this training on light colors, you can improve your efficiency and accuracy in the tasks you perform, becoming a more effective and confident performer.

What texture of the material?

Choose a soft and delicate yarn that doesn't have a high wool content, which can be itchy, or a high acrylic content, which can cause lint. Yarns made from microfiber, cotton, viscose or silk are good choices because they are soft to the touch and comfortable to wear. These materials are also more resistant to lint and are easier to care for.

Best yarn for a scarf?

Microfiber, cotton, viscose or silk yarns are the best. Microfiber is soft and delicate, perfect for comfortable wear. Cotton is natural and airy, perfect for warm days. Viscose has a silky texture and drapes beautifully on the body. Silk is luxurious and pleasant to the touch, perfect for elegant occasions. Each of these materials has its own unique properties that make yarns made from them exceptionally practical and aesthetic.

What if I destroy my work?

The yarn is easy to rip, so you can use one ball several times. Yarn prices range from a few to a dozen zlotys.

What to look for when buying a crochet hook?

Don't buy crochet hooks that are more expensive than 5-7 PLN, but also avoid the cheapest ones you see. Choose a crochet hook without burrs, preferably made of metal, wood or strong acrylic. Such materials provide durability and comfort during work, which is crucial when doing precise handicrafts.

Your entrance exam

Now that you have your tools, you can start learning. Master the basic stitches: chain stitch, half double crochet, double crochet, turn stitch, cluster, picot, double and triple crochet. Learn best from video tutorials.

Don't be afraid to take your own notes. Describe the diagrams in the way that is most comfortable for you, so that it is easier to understand how to do different elements, such as columns. You can use simple drawings, abbreviations or step-by-step explanations that best suit the way you learn and assimilate new skills.

Your first pattern

Look for the first pattern in a Polish crochet magazine . On websites, graphic files are often blurry and unclear.

Why do you choose a pattern from a magazine and not from the Internet?

Due to their quality, Polish leaflets contain all the information you need about handicrafts such as crocheting or knitting. They often contain detailed instructions, patterns, and advice on choosing the right materials and tools. You can also find inspiration and new ideas for projects that will help you develop your craft skills. Browsing through leaflets can also be a great way to learn about new trends in the field of handicrafts and meet a community of people passionate about creative hobbies.
